Pittsburgh council nixes bill to bar masks at G-20

PITTSBURGH – A proposal has been rejected by Pittsburgh City Council that would make it illegal for anyone to wear a mask to conceal their faces while attempting something unlawful.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl’s administration sought to have the bill passed as a safety measure for this month’s Group of 20 economic summit.

Opponents said the bill is a pretext to detain people and would likely lead to lawsuits.

City council members said they haven’t gotten clear answers from administration officials on why the legislation is needed, or on how police can judge the intent of people who might be carrying PVC pipe or a carton of eggs.
